Lost to the Future: A new update on Marty McFly’s missing ES-345 guitar

Mark Agnesi shares key details that will narrow down the search

You are probably aware by now of the global search that Gibson has instigated for the missing Cherry Red ES-345 from the iconic 1985 movie Back to the Future. Perhaps you’ve even seen Dateline’s Keith Morrison join the campaign or heard about the forthcoming documentary from Gibson Films.

Now, in a new update from Gibson HQ in Nashville, Tennessee, Gibson Director of Brand Experience Mark Agnesi has posted a video discussing some of the guitar’s distinguishing features, including its unusual solid parallelogram inlay at the 12th fret.

The missing ES-345 guitar, played by Marty McFly in the Enchantment Under the Sea dance scene, is thought to be a 1960 or 1961 model. Agnesi shares useful information on the serial number formats from those years of manufacture, along with an update on some of the tips that have been coming in so far.
