The Ballad of Judas Priest is co-directed by Sam Dunn and Tom Morello
Sony Music Vision has announced the upcoming production of The Ballad of Judas Priest, a new documentary chronicling the legendary heavy metal band’s remarkable 50-year journey. Co-directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sam Dunn and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who makes his directorial debut, the film is produced by the Emmy and Peabody-winning Banger Films. The documentary promises an unprecedented, intimate portrayal of Judas Priest, highlighting their immense influence on music and popular culture, including iconic hits such as “Breaking the Law” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming.”
Originating from working-class roots in Birmingham, UK, Judas Priest has shaped the heavy metal genre significantly since the 1970s, selling over 50 million records and releasing 19 studio albums. The band’s recent achievements include their 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and their groundbreaking 2024 album “Invincible Shield,” which marked the first time a metal band released albums 50 years apart and earned a GRAMMY® nomination for Best Metal Performance—guitarist Richie Faulkner rips on this one. Judas Priest will further celebrate their legacy with a co-headlining North American tour alongside Alice Cooper this fall.
Judas Priest says, “We have lived and breathed metal for over five decades, and finally in this documentary we are summoning our congregation to officially witness our lives uncensored, in a never-before-seen way… the cassock comes off, revealing Priest in all its metal glory!”
Dunn and Morello emphasized their intention to showcase not only the band’s musical legacy but also their role in fostering an inclusive heavy metal community, further cementing Judas Priest’s enduring impact on the global music scene. The documentary is set to be distributed by Sony Music Vision.
